Socotra Women's Foundation for Response and Development Participates in Yemen's Climate Change Awareness Campaign

The President of the Socotra Women's Foundation for Response and Development, Najwa Ali, has participated in an online awareness campaign about the dangers of environmental pollution and climate change in Yemen. This campaign was launched in mid-February by women's organizations from various Yemeni governorates under the slogan "Our Environment, Our Future." Yemen has been ranked 172 out of 182 countries as the most vulnerable to climate change and the least prepared for climate shocks, according to the Notre Dame Global Adaptation Index.

Regarding the foundation's participation in the campaign, the president called for special attention to Socotra Island. She stated, "Socotra Island is suffering from the negative impacts of climate change. It needs the establishment of a local authority to protect the island and confront natural disasters to prevent it from being removed from the World Heritage List. We have suffered from several cyclones that have damaged the island and its inhabitants."

She added, "On behalf of the team at the Socotra Women's Foundation for Response and Development, we are proud to participate in this campaign, which is dedicated to women and organized by a group of civil society organizations across the governorates of Yemen. We support the consolidation of efforts to build a strong society capable of keeping pace with the changes brought about by climate change, women's empowerment, and peace. This campaign is unique and will enhance Yemeni women's access to regional and global platforms within the framework of sustainable development, as well as raise awareness through innovative media messages across all social media platforms."

She emphasized that "Yemeni women have always been at the forefront of many celebrations, such as World Water Day and World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. They have also participated in international conferences and represented Yemen in the international community and decision-making processes to unify their voices as a fundamental and vital factor in making the state and governments realize the importance of climate change, women, and peace, to achieve positive social, economic, and political change and drive development in Yemen regionally and globally. Based on these efforts, the Socotra Women's Foundation for Response and Development seeks to continue participating in the campaign, which is the first building block and a source of hope for women."
